TO SAVE LIVES
Medical Equipment & Medical Supplies
Just like being prepared for battle, being ready for medical emergencies is a priority for our military and first responders. Lifesaving equipment, first aid supplies, diagnostic equipment and medical kits are staples when it comes to the inventory our medical professionals have on hand. Depending on the assignment or environment the type of medical equipment you carry will vary.
When it comes to equipment, there are different categories of medical equipment that our first responders use.
Medical Equipment Categories
When emergencies occur, our first-responders need to be trained and ready to act. Without the proper training on lifelike equipment, they may not be prepared when an emergency happens. Galls has simulation equipment designed specifically for different types of emergency response, including intubation, arrhythmia and advanced life support. Training on the premium brands including CPR Prompt, Simulaids and North American Rescue allow our first responders to be prepared and confident when an emergency arises.
Diagnostic Equipment and Infection Control Supplies
It is necessary when facing an emergency to have the proper diagnostic equipment and supplies to assess the situation and determine next steps. Some key diagnostic equipment that all EMTs and medics carry can include:
- Blood pressure cuff
- Pulse Oximeter
Keeping the patient and yourself protected from antigens and disease is imperative to survival. There are multiple products that our first responders use on a daily basis, some of those include: safety glasses, medical gloves, face masks, disinfectant, antiseptic wipes and biohazard waste bags.
Many EMTs start off their first-aid inventory with a protection kit such as the Safetec Universal Protection Kit. This kit is a must for any first responder who is at a scene where body fluids are present. It includes Red Z solidifier, medical gloves, wipes, face mask and more. It is designed for your personal protection, plus supplies for area clean up.
Saving a patient’s life is a challenging task. Not only do our medical technicians have to deal with the stress of the situation they must have all the supplies and equipment that will assist them in executing lifesaving procedures. Many medical personnel begin with a first responder kit. There is no real definition of what makes a first responder kit, but some items certainly fit the category: belt packs with emergency shears and flashlights; large bags with multiple compartments, including blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes.
For our first responders, the fully loaded Elite First Aid Tactical Trauma Kit 3 includes 25 different types of emergency medical supplies featuring a blood pressure cuff, casualty blanket, pen light, bandages and much more. This kit is durable, lightweight and has exterior MOLLE webbing for easy attachment of additional pouches.
A staple for the majority of medical kits is going to be the North American Rescue CAT Tourniquet, Gen 7. It was named the official tourniquet of the U.S. Army after it was found to be 100% effective in stopping blood flow in both the arms and legs. The North American rescue CAT is designed for all weather conditions, lightweight and has one-handed application.
Besides trauma kits, there are a multitude of supplies that are needed for lifesaving. Every emergency is different, so it is imperative that they have standard emergency medical products like:
- CPR equipment
- Oxygen equipment
- First aid supplies
- Intubation supplies
- Other medical accessories
Stabilizing the patient after an accident, whether it’s a broken arm or a traumatic brain injury (TBI) requires additional equipment. Depending on the level of injury the equipment used may range from immobilization braces to splints.
One of the most popular splints used is the SAM Splint 4.25” x 36”. This splint supports a variety of fracture locations such as legs, forearms, cervical spine and the humerus. It is easily trimmed, stored and carried, plus it is waterproof, inexpensive and does not impede X-rays.
For total immobilization many EMTs use the Dyna Med Multipurpose Spine Board with Spider Strap. This spine board is ideal for CPR, extrications and even has extra-large hand holds to fit the bulky firefighter gloves. It is designed with 10 points of attachment, 500lb capacity and is constructed with a high-density polytheline plastic.
