Firefighter Rescue Gear, Fire Boots, Turnout Gear & More
As you can imagine, the daily stresses and intense on-the-job requirements for firefighters and fire safety professionals are extreme. Firefighters always need to be ready to move, so it is important that they have flame-resistant apparel and reliable firefighter equipment. The fire fighting equipment and gear these professionals work with must also be durable and offer extreme protection from the elements.
Galls is proud to be the go-to fire store for many fire professionals and offers the industry’s best-selling brands including 5.11 Tactical, Haix, Code Red, Bullard, Fire-Dex and much more.
Stationwear
Stationwear is the standard fireman uniform that’s worn around the station and underneath turnout gear. It typically consists of a job shirt, FR shirt, FR pants, safety toe boots and other gear made from flame-resistant fibers such as Nomex. The color of the firefighter uniform is most often navy but will differ from department to department.
A popular work shirt that was designed with input from firefighters is the 5.11 Tactical Job Shirt. This quarter-zip provides a professional look with a comfortable feel and is built for versatility and utility. Features of this pullover include multiple pockets for storing gear, handwarmer pockets on both sides and mic pockets at each shoulder. This pullover can also be customized to meet department requirements as well.
The Flying Cross Men’s Nomex IIIA Trousers provide protection without sacrificing comfort. These uniform pants come ISO 9001: 2008 certified and feature reinforced stitching at the pockets and waistband to reduce wear and tear. The seams and seat of these Nomex pants are triple-needle stitched to extend their lifespan and the soil-release fabric and Linktrak creases supply a crisp, clean appearance.
Fire Fighter Boots
Firefighter gear includes protective footwear that enables firefighters to enter potentially dangerous environments relatively safely. High heat is a given, but what about other hazards on the job? Firefighters deal with slippery surfaces, difficult terrain, standing water, sharp objects and more.
There are many performance features to consider when selecting firefighter boots. Some of these include:
- Heat resistance
- Corrosion resistance
- Cut, puncture and abrasion resistance
- Conductive heat resistance (where the sole's surface shouldn't conduct heat above a certain temperature)
- Slip resistance
- Attachment strength (lacing, findings, and fastenings)
- Flame resistance
- Sewing thread heat resistance
While design, materials, and construction certainly matter, so does tread. A fire safety professional who, for example, works on a pitched roof will benefit from a different type of tread than one who works primarily on natural terrain. Keeping the various priorities of design, materials and tread in mind, a fire safety professional must look for an equally balanced boot that allows them to respond to most situations.
A popular choice for high-heat proximity and structure fires from Galls is the Fire-Dex Leather Structural Fire Boot. This fire boot is designed to provide absorption of high impact, engineered with a multi-density footbed and 3D vulcanized rubber heel with toe guard. It also has a Vibram® sole designed with a diamond-plated ladder shank area for increased traction when climbing ladders. On top of that, it’s made from a breathable crosstech waterproof barrier lining to keep the foot moisture-free. Plus, the DuPont™ KEVLAR® lining provides safety against hazards and creates a cut-resistant barrier.
Turnout Gear
Turnout gear, also known as bunker gear, is a protective suit that provides a barrier against flames and extreme temperatures. These firefighting suits will either come in the form of a jumpsuit or consist of a turnout coat and turnout pants. These firefighter suits are designed with three distinct layers to optimize its protection:
Thermal Liner: This layer is the most crucial part of the suit because it provides the majority of thermal protection and heat stress reduction. It’s what traps the air between layers of nonwoven material and face cloth material. The more thermal lining there is, the more protection and less heat the firefighter will feel.
Moisture Barrier: This is the middle layer that’s designed to provide resistance from water and chemicals such as chlorine, battery acid, aqueous film-forming foam, gasoline, hydraulic fluid and antifreeze fluid. It’s typically constructed with a permeable film barrier that’s laminated to an inherently flame-resistant substrate fabric. It also allows perspiration to move away from the body.
Outer Shell: This is the outermost layer and also the most durable. It’s the first defense from physical hazards and guards against cuts, abrasions, direct flames and liquids. It’s also effective against airborne carcinogens as well.
