Oh, to be a Barfly on the Wall
It was about 2:30 a.m. and the bars had just closed. Another officer and I were on bicycle patrol near the center of a residential area observing some straggling drunks making their way home. As we sat and watched, a male subject drove up on a bike and crashed near a two-story house. He began knocking on the door for the upper apartment. After several minutes of this, nobody answered. The man, who appeared to have his fair share of drinks for the evening, began stumbling around the house. There was a large bush directly next to the front entryway that could provide access for someone who was a skilled climber, to the roof above for entry upstairs. We sat on our bikes and watched as he started to climb. He was about four feet up when he lost his balance and fell to the ground. The bag of goods that he was carrying fell with him. We began to laugh but it wasn't over.
He started climbing again, this time making it almost all the way to the top. As he was making his move to get off the bush and onto the roof, he once again came crashing down to the ground with a loud thump. At this point, he made so much noise that the people upstairs finally came down and let him in and he way okay. We laughed for a good hour after the incident just thinking about the determination this man had!
