Care and Maintanence
After purchasing your spray unit, check it immediately to make sure that it's in proper working order. To do this you'll need to test it. This should be done outdoors and away from any people, animals, vehicles and buildings.
Here's how:
- Wear protective eye gear
- Use unit in an upright position to assure deployment of the correct amounts of propellant and solution
- Pick a clear, still day, as wind, rain and other inclement weather conditions can result in accidental self-contamination
- Go to an open area, point the unit away from you and give the button two double taps, lasting just a second or two
- Take note of the length and width of the spray area, what it looks like, and the direction of the burst
- After spraying, always make sure that the safety top is replaced securely
- If unit fails to operate or does so at a decreased distance, propellant may be depleted
Other maintenance tips include:
- Replacing spray after each use
- Discarding old, unused spray every 2-3 years. While pepper spray is made with natural ingredients and won't deteriorate with age, the propellant breaks down over time
- Testing your unit every 6 months
- Shaking unit at least once every month to avoid separation of ingredients
- Periodically checking spray unit to make certain lint or dirt is not clogging nozzle and that there are no dents or bends
- Avoiding exposure to prolonged periods of direct sunlight or extreme heat causing a rupture of the seal
