GPS means Global Positioning System. It's a satellite-based navigation system that always lets the user know his or her location. Furthermore, unlike some other navigational aids, it allows users to pinpoint their location accurately, whether it's day or night, sunny or cloudy, wet or dry.
GPS is based on a system of coordinates, like the latitude and longitude lines on maps. The coordinates provide a built-in frame of reference.
Twenty-four satellites, each in its own orbit above the earth, transmit signals to ground stations around the world, which, in turn, are forwarded to hand-held or mounted receivers. So when you absolutely, positively have to know where you are, just turn on your GPS unit and within moments you'll find out.
