I bought the GX-4 after returning a pair of Danner Striker Torrents. The hard rubber compound of the Danner boots was treacherous on ice and snow, so I exchanged them for the Bates GX-4. The rubber compound on this boot is aggressive and soft like the compound of snow tires. I have been wearing the GX-4 for one year on patrol here in Western Maine. They are comfortable, they've held up well, and they're excellent on ice and snow. I highly recommend them if you're going to be wearing them in slippery winter conditions. If you're going to be walking in deep snow, I would recommend the GX-8, which is the same boot except it is eight inches high.
