The 1st pair I bought was great. Stayed comfortable for over two years. Bought another pair less than a year ago, my feet would start hurting after a few hours on the job a couple of months in the new pair. The heel started cracking out on both shoes by six months. A great product that quality went down the tubes. I'm not buying Bates again.
I had these boots for about 2 months doing light walking at work with no problems. The past week I have been doing a lot of walking during a 12 hour shift and I have blisters all over my feet! The rub on my heel is so bad it ripped my sock completely two days in a row. In addition to both of my heels being rubbed raw, I also have blisters on two of my toes and the ball of my foot . The only good thing I can say is that they do clear the metal detector without having to take them off.
I needed a boot that would work well for hiking and also be good protection for riding motorcycle. These seem to be just the ticket. They are very comfortable for hiking as well as riding. They are not the waterproof style but I have stayed dry in light rain. We did ride in a very heavy steady downpour for about an hour and there was a small amount of leakage around the bottom laces after half an hour or so but otherwise my feet were dry. I was impressed. I am a passenger on the motorcycle. They do seem to collect dust but maybe that is because I sprayed them with a boot water-proofer. We live on a gravel road so that doesn't help. They seem to breath well so they are comfortable in the hot weather.
I have bought numerous boots from Galls. I have tried several different brands. This was my first set from Bates. I based my choice on the reviews and the price. These were just a backup pair for my converse duty boots that I love. I thought I would get another set of boots without a steel/composite toe. The first day I got them I wore them around the station. They were instantly painful and no support on the inside. I am not sure if it was just my foot or the boot, but they rubbed on the top arch and the bottom felt like it had no insole in it at all. I am sending them back. I didn't want to chance breaking them in and still not liking them.
I have these boots in the mens non zipper and I love them. They fit great right out of the box and no break in time. I wear them every day and have no trouble out of them and they shine like a new dime.
