Wildland
Firefighting Gear

Gathering Your Gear

When fire emergencies arise, there’s a mad scramble for tools and supplies to do the job. Most agencies will give you the specialized equipment — rakes, spades, chainsaws and accessories — to deal with the problem as well as the fire shelter, tents and sleeping bags. However, personnel are expected to provide a majority of their own gear and equipment.

At minimum, that gear should consist of:

a reliable two-way radio and replacement batteries so you can maintain contact with your team and with leaders back at base camp

  • a helmet and shroud to protect your head and neck from falling embers and crashing tree limbs
  • a pair of goggles to shield your eyes from smoke and debris
  • a pair of wildland fire fighting boots to protect and support your feet
  • jacket, shirt and pants that are fire-resistant, yet comfortable when battling flames in high summer heat
  • a pair of gloves that prevent your hands from becoming scorched or burned
  • a first aid kit so you can deal with minor medical emergencies on site

Be ready when the call comes by storing your gear in one bag. Keeping it handy in one place makes for an easy grab and go!
