Bike Patrol

The Bike & Its Components

Officer safety is the name of the game in the bike patrol biz with comfort following close behind. Sean Collinsworth, founder of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Bike Patrol Unit and noted Bicycle Expert, counsels bike patrol officers to "choose function over aesthetics, comfort over style." Here are several ways to accomplish this.

The surest path to equipment safety is to choose a bike that meets the needs of your job by way of frame and components.

Opt for a lightweight, durable frame that is strong enough to withstand the rigors of your tour Choose high quality brakes, gears, pedals and other components to insure safe, comfortable operation. They should be rated at Race Entry Level. On a scale of 1-10, that's about a 6+. The extra dollars you shell out on the better components will save you time and money in the long run. Your bike seat should conform to your pelvic area's shape. It's really a matter of customizing the seat to an individual. Generally speaking, men need a long, narrow configuration. Women will be safer and more comfortable with a shorter, wider seat. For the ultimate in safety and comfort, check out some of the cut-out seats now on the market. Veteran bike officers swear by them! Avoid the bulky, massively gel-filled seats. They only cause additional wear and tear on your body and have proven ineffective for long-term comfort.

Outfit your bike with combination on-road/off-road tires. Constructed with a smooth center ridge tread surrounded by a series of knobby lugs, they afford plenty of traction for riding on pavement yet provide adequate gripping for off-road excursions.

Proper daily cleaning and scheduled maintenance checks will keep your bike in optimum working condition, thereby insuring your safety. It's a good idea to give your bike a thorough going over after your tour. Check that all the components are in proper working order. Make or take note of any adjustments or repairs that need to be done prior to your next foray into the streets.

Above all, don't go down to the local discount retailer to outfit your unit with bikes. Those bikes are fine for the casual, once-in-a-while ride around the local park. However, the frame and components on the discount retailer bicycles won't last a week doing what you do!
